No. 13 Lakers drop road tilt at No. 15 Indianapolis, 18-16, Friday

GVSU comes up just short in hard-fought road contest

INDIANAPOLIS -- The No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers fell in a tight road Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) bout, 18-16, to the No. 15 Indianapolis Greyhounds Friday night in the Indiana capital. The Lakers got five goals from senior Erika Neumen and Carly Shisler caged four second-half goals and added two assists for a game-high six points on the night. The Lakers fall to 9-4 on the season and 7-1 in the GLIAC while UIndy moves to 10-3 on the year and 6-2 in conference play.

Meggan Loyd got the Lakers off to a hot start with a goal :30 into the match, followed a minute later on a goal from Neumen from a Shisler assist. The quick start was promptly answered by a pair of Greyhound goals and the match was back level after four minutes of action. Abbi O'Neal put the Lakers back in front a few minutes later, but two goals in a :45 span from Indianapolis put GVSU behind for the first time in the match (4-3) 10 minutes in. Neumen answered immediately, scoring :20 later to retie the match before O'Neal scored back-to-back goals to open another two-goal advantage for GVSU. The teams would trade tallies back and forth the rest of the half and the Lakers would wind up with a 10-9 lead heading into the half.

Indianapolis came out of intermission with two quick goals to take a brief lead, but Shisler responded with two straight goals of her own before feeding Ashley Bailey for her 30th tally of the season, putting the Lakers up 13-11 five minutes into the second period. The game had been predicated on quick spurts by both sides to that point, but Indy finally sustained a 5-0 run midway through the half to regain the lead and, despite two more goals from Shisler down the stretch and a few late chances, the Lakers could never regain the advantage.

The Lakers look to bounce back on Sunday (April 15), taking on McKendree at 1:00 PM in Lebanon, Illinois. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live coverage of the match. The Lakers next home match is Friday (April 20) in their special Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night against Northern Michigan at 7:00 PM. Watch the story on the Lakers personal connection to MS here
