ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 13 Grand Valley State Lakers stay hot despite freezing temperatures with an 18-7 win over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Davenport Panthers Friday night at a snowy GVSU Lacrosse Complex. GVSU has now won eight straight matches and improves to 9-2 on the year and a perfect 7-0 in the GLIAC while the Panthers fall to 3-6 on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
The Lakers were dominant in almost all team stat categories on the day. GVSU took 38 shots compared to 16 by Davenport, including an 8-3 edge in free position shots. The Lakers scooped ten more ground balls than their opponent Friday and won 16 draw controls compared to 11 by Davenport.
Erika Neumen and
Kelley Fitzgerald led the Lakers with five points each. Neumen scored five goals while controlling three draws and collecting three ground balls. Fitzgerald had four assists and scored once.
Meghan Datema had a hat-trick and controlled five draws while
Carly Shisler contributed three goals as well.
Davenport scored the first goal of the match just over a minute in, but Shisler responded with two straight goals to get the Lakers in from and spark an eight-goal run for GVSU to pull away. The Lakers would carry a 9-4 lead into halftime and kept strong pressure in the second half to coast, albeit under intermittent falling snow, to the double-digit victory.
The Lakers take their eight-match winning streak on the road next week, headed to regional foe Lindenwood on Monday (April 9) in St. Charles, Missouri at 4:00 PM. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live coverage of the match that could have major implications on the NCAA Tournament.
