GVSU downs Wayne State, 5-4, moves on to the Midwest Region II Championship Match

The No. 2 seeded Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated the No. 7 seeded Wayne State Warriors, 5-4, in the 2018 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship preliminary round on Saturday, April 28. The Lakers will now face the No. 3 seed University of Missouri St. Louis in the Midwest Region II Championship match on Sunday, April 29 at Grandville Middle School. First serve is set for 11 a.m.

The Lakers swept doubles action to take an early 3-0 lead. Abby Perkins and Liv Christman won 8-6 at the No. 3 pairing, followed by another win by Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger's 9-7 win at the No. 1 doubles position. The duo of Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney completed the sweep after they won 9-7 from No. 2 doubles.

In singles actions, Wayne State nearly rallied back to take the match, but GVSU held them off as they won two matches to capture the win. Perkins won 6-2, 6-2 from the No. 4 spot, while Heiniger would claim the match point for the Lakers from No. 6 singles as she won 6-3, 6-4. Ballard dropped 6-0, 6-0, from No. 1 singles, while Olivia Hanover also fell 6-3, 6-3, from the No. 6 slot. Moccia battled hard out of No. 3 singles but was defeated in three sets. Moccia dropped the first set 6-2, won the second set 6-1, and then lost the third set by a score of 6-3 and Sweeney was defeated 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2 spot.
