Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon from Saginaw Valley State, winning game one 6-5 and game two 7-4. GVSU, now 25-18 overall and 13-10 in GLIAC action, will host the Cardinals in the series finale Sunday (April 29) at 12 noon. The Lakers will honor their nine seniors prior to Sunday's game.
Game 1
Saginaw Valley State struck for two runs on one hit and two Laker errors in the top of the first, however, GVSU wasted little time in pulling even as freshman CF
Nolan Anspaugh walked on four pitches and junior RF
Zach Berry hit an 0-1 fastball over the right field wall. Junior RF
Jacob Gleason reached on a bunt single and scored when junior 1B
Ryan Blake-Jones doubled down the leftfield line. Blake-Jones would eventually score on a wild pitch to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead after one inning of play.
The Cardinals scored a single run in the fourth, but the Lakers answered again as freshman C
Caleb Anspaugh reached on a bunt single and scored when N. Anspaugh hit his first career HR over the leftfield wall to up the Laker lead to 6-3. SVSU scored one in the fifth and one in the seven, but junior pitcher shut the door and picked up his second save.
Senior RHP
Noah Lamboley (3-1) picked up the win, allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits in five innings of work. Berry was 2-for-3 with two hits and two RBI, while N. Anspaugh was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Gleason collected a pair of hits.
Game 2
Like game one, SVSU pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. GVSU one again answered as N. Anspaugh and Berry singled to open the game and Ladoux drove in a run with a single to center. The Cardinals increased their lead to 4-1 with two runs in the fourth, but GVSU would push across four runs on two hits and a Cardinal error to take a 5-4 lead. The inning started with Blake-Jones reaching on an error, followed by a LaDoux walk and a bunt single from
Josh C. Smith. Glick was hit by a pitch to plate one run and SS
Christian Faust delivered a 2-run double to tie the game 4-4. N. Anspaugh gave the Lakers a 5-4 lead with a sacrafice fly that scored Glick.
The Lakers created some breathing room with two runs in the fifth. Gleason singled to center and scored on a Blake-Jones double to left center. Smith doubled and Glick plated Blake-Jones with a sacrafice fly.
Senior
Jake Mason (1-1) picked up the win in relief, allowing just two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Sophomore LHP
Travis Keys started on the mound and struck out five in 3.2 innings. Glick and Faust each drove in a pair, while Smith collected a pair of hits.
