Lakers win fifth straight, down Cedarville Thursday

Gleason's five-hit day leads Lakers to another win

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State Lakers dominated Midwest regional foe Cedarville Yellow Jackets, 16-2, Thursday afternoon at Osceola County Stadium. GVSU has won five games in a row and improve to 7-4 on the year while Cedarville falls to 3-8 for the season. The Lakers have won the first five of their nine-game spring break trip in Florida.

Jacob Gleason set a season high with five hits while matching his season best with six RBI to lead the Laker attack. Gleason extended his hitting streak to nine games and has hit safely in 10 of his first 11 games of his Laker career.  Freshman Caleb Anspaugh had three hits in the game, as did Alex Mandeville, while Nolan Anspaugh had two hits. The Lakers had 16 hits as a team for the game. Ryan Blake-Jones homered for the second time this season and drove in four runs.

Christian Mercure (W, 1-0) made his season debut with four scoreless innings, allowing four hits in the win. Jake Mason was dominant in relief with eight strikeouts across four innings of work, allowing two hits. Ricky Clark closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless frame.

The Lakers got on the board in the first inning. After an Aaron Donald single, Gleason doubled to put runners at second and third for Blake-Jones, who lofted a fly ball deep enough to center for a sacrifice fly. It was the eighth RBI in the last six games for Blake-Jones while Gleason wasted no time pushing his hit streak to nine games.

GVSU broke things open with a four-run second inning. Gleason blooped an RBI-single into left, which set up a first-and-third and a double steal that scored Nolan Anspaugh before Blake-Jones clobbered his second home run of the year over the right field fence to cap off the big inning.

GVSU took advantage of an unearned run in the fourth then used RBI doubles from Alex Mandeville and Drake Ellens to add two more runs in the fifth, followed by an RBI single from Gleason, to open a 9-0 lead. Cedarville's only runs came in the eighth on a two-run homer, but the Lakers answered with four runs in the home side to remove any remaining doubt.

The Lakers had some fun during their spring break trip, getting pitchers Kyle Lawson (walk) and Ryan Arnold (groundout) at bats late in the game. The Lakers look to keep the good times rolling on Friday when they take on Rockhurst at 10:30 AM. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUBaseball on Twitter will have live coverage of the game.
