WHEELING, W. Va – The No. 20 Grand Valley State Lakers earned their second straight win, 22-11, over the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals Sunday afternoon.
Meghan Datema led the Lakers with six goals in the match while
Erika Neumen,
Carly Shisler,
Sarah Stagaard and
Ashley Bailey contributed three goals apiece.
Kelley Fitzgerald dished out five assists for the second straight game. The Lakers improve to 3-2 on the year while the Cardinals fall to 2-6 on the season.
The Lakers dominated in shots (47-23), draw controls (24-11) and caused 17 turnovers in the win. Datema got the Lakers on the board less than a minute into the contest on an assist from
Meggan Loyd. The Lakers would rattle off the first four goals of the match over the first seven minutes to open up a lead they would never relinquish. The Cardinals rallied to trim the Laker lead to three at halftime, 10-7.
The Lakers outscored the Cardinals 12-4 in the second half. With a lead of four with 16 minutes left in the contest before GVSU went on an 8-1 run to end the match. The first three goals came within a minute. Neumen, Bailey and Stagaard all scored within 60 seconds to start the run.
The Lakers return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Friday (March 23) in the Upper Peninsula when they take on the Northern Michigan Wildcats at 7:00 PM. GVSULakers.com and @GVSUWLAX on Twitter will have live updates throughout the match.
