MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers set the tone early and coasted to a 22-3 win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Friday night in GVSU's first-ever trip to the Superior Dome.
Meghan Datema led the Lakers with five goals in the contest. The Lakers are now winners of three straight matches and improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in the GLIAC while Northern Michigan falls to 1-4 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
11 different Lakers scored in the match. Senior
Maria D'Angelo recorded her second hat-trick of the season with three goals in the contest.
Bailey Ellsworth dished out five assists and
Kelley Fitzgerald added four assists and a goal for GVSU.
The Lakers rattled off four goals in the first four minutes and scored the first 10 goals of the match.
Carly Shisler and Datema scored within 14 seconds of each other to spark the scoring. The duo would alternate goals again two minutes later, this time within a 22-second span.
Ashley Bailey,
Sarah Stagaard,
Abbi O'Neal and
Meggan Loyd would all join in on the goal-scoring fun as the Lakers ran away from NMU early. GVSU would lead 16-1 at halftime.
Brianna DeMilia made seven saves in the match, posting a .700 save percentage before getting a breather over the final 15 minutes. The Lakers would glide to victory with a 6-2 ledger in the second half to secure their third straight win.
