Grand Valley State dropped an 85-73 GLIAC road tilt at Lake Superior State Thursday (Feb. 22) night. GVSU, 14-13 overall and 9-10 in GLIAC action, will square off against #3 Ferris State Saturday in Big Rapids. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. The Lakers are now locked into the GLIAC tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face #2 seeded Lake Superior State next Wednesday (Feb. 28) in Sault Ste. Marie.
Grand Valley State took its only lead of the game (9-8) on a
Hunter Hale three-pointer at the 15:51 mark of the first half. However, LSSU hit a three-pointer of its own to take a 12-9 lead at 15:20 and never relinquished the lead. Lake Superior State led by as many as 15 (34-19) in the opening half, but GVSU battled and cut the lead to 10 (39-29) at the half.
Chris Dorsey and
Justin Greason each scored four in the closing five minutes, while
Zach West added a field goal.
The Lakers cut the Lake Superior State lead to as low as seven on two occasions in the final 20 minutes, the last coming on a
Jake Van Tubbergen bucket at the 9:28 mark. However, the Soo Lakers answered each and every run and GVSU was unable to get any closer than 10 in the final 8:45.
Dorsey led GVSU with career-highs in points (21) and rebounds (9) in 28 minutes of action. Senior guard
Myles Miller chipped in 14 points and Hale added 12 in the scoring column. Van Tubbergen tallied eight points and seven rebounds. The advantage for Lake Superior State came from the three-point line where they held an 11-3 margin on made treys. GVSU hit 55.6 percent from the field (30-54), but just 3-of-14 from behind the three-point line. GVSU held a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint, but LSSU outscored GVSU 45-31 in bench points.
