Lakers fall in regular season finale, 75-64, to Ferris State

GVSU is No. 7 seed in GLIAC Tournament, will face Lake Superior State Wednesday

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Valley State Lakers fell on the road in their final regular season game, 75-64, to the No. 3 Ferris State Bulldogs in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Saturday afternoon at Jim Wink Arena. Drake Baar led all scorers with 19 points in the game, matching a season high for the senior. The Lakers finish the regular season 14-14 and 9-11 in GLIAC play. Ferris State improves to 29-1 on the year and 19-1 in the conference.

The Lakers shot .397 (23-58) from the floor, going 2-9 from three and 16-18 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs wound up shooting .391 (25-54) while going 6-21 from three and 19-28 from the line. The Lakers swiped six steals in the game and pulled down 34 rebounds in the contest. Ferris State had seven blocks in the game and secured 43 boards.

Baar matched his season high, which he set in the season opener against UMSL in a neutral site game at Jim Wink Arena. Myles Miller added ten points and dished out six assists while Justin Greason added 12 points, going 4-4 from the free throw line. Jake Van Tubbergen added nine points and matched Baar with seven rebounds to co-lead the Lakers. Drew Cushingberry led Ferris State with 17 points while Zach Hankins contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively as the game went scoreless for the first three minutes. Ferris State eventually hit a pair of shots to open a 5-2 lead, but the Lakers answered with a 6-0 run lead by Baar with a pair of hook shots to take an 8-5 lead eight minutes in. The shooting woes continued on both with the game deadlocked at 12-12 until Myles Miller broke the tie with a pair of free throws at the six-minute mark. The offense picked up a bit over the final five minutes of the half with each team getting some good looks in transition and the Bulldogs took a 25-23 lead into the locker room.

The Lakers were called for six fouls in the first three minutes of the second half and the Bulldogs took advantage of being in the bonus early, jumping up by as many as 12 over the next several minutes. The Lakers would fight it back to within eight points with nine minutes left, but the Bulldogs pressure continued down the stretch.

The Lakers had already locked up the seven seed in the GLIAC Tournament, set to face the Lake Superior State Lakers in the quarterfinals in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on Wednesday. The Lakers split their regular season meetings with LSSU, with both home teams earning victories. The rubber match will be broadcast live on ESPN 96.1 FM in Grand Rapids and everywhere on the iHeart app.
