GVSU falls to Indianapolis, 88-80, Sunday

Lakers suffer first loss of the season at hands of Greyhounds

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- In a tale of two halves, the Grand Valley State Lakers suffered their first loss of the 2018-19 season, 88-80, on Sunday (Nov. 18) at the hands of the Indianapolis Greyhounds at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers fall to 3-1 on the year while the Greyhounds improve to 4-0 this season. Three Lakers scored in double figures in the game, led by Hunter Hale's 17 points.

Once again, the Lakers came out of the gates red hot. They shot .571 from the field (20-35) in the first half and went 7-12 from deep. Hale drilled three first-half three's and had 15 points at the break to lead the Lakers to a 50-37 lead at halftime. Things cooled off for GVSU in the second half, though, as they shot just .286 (10-35) in the second period - including 0-12 shooting from three. The Greyhounds whittled down the GVSU lead, forcing a couple of ties midway through the period but, for a while, the Lakers denied Indianapolis a lead. That changed with seven minutes left, when the Greyhounds sank a pair of free throws to take a two-point lead which they would never relinquish.

"We played just about as good as you can play in the first half. We made every shot, our energy was outstanding," said head coach Ric Wesley. "Second half, just the opposite. They came out a little bit better and we had a hard time getting anything going. That's a really good team. They're 4-0 for a reason. I was happy with the way we started and we played them tough until the end, just didn't get the result we wanted today."

Hale was joined in the double-figures club by Jeremiah Ferguson (16 points) and Justin Greason (15 points) while Jake Van Tubbergen finished with nine points and five boards. Greason went 6-9 from the field Sunday and Kindred Williams went 4-7 for eight points on the day. Hale had five assists for the second straight game and GVSU had an impressive 17-11 assist-to-turnover margin. Isaiah Brock had six points on 2-3 shooting and a pair of rebounds, but foul trouble limited him to just 17 minutes. GVSU won the rebounding battle, 38-37,

The Lakers look to rebound Wednesday (Nov. 21) as they host NAIA Grace Christian at 7:00 PM. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live stats, video and audio (ESPN 96.1) while @gvsubasketball provides live Twitter updates.
