The #13 nationally ranked Grand Valley State women's basketball team will travel to Romeoville, Ill. on Friday (Nov. 16) for an 8:00 PM (ET) matchup with the #15 Lewis Flyers before heading over to Indianapolis, Ind. for a 1:00 PM matchup with the Indy Greyhounds on Sunday (Nov. 18). This will be the first regular season road trip for the 2018-19 squad as they opened up play at home last weekend (Nov. 9-10) where they earned a couple of wins over Maryville, 74-50, and Missouri-St. Louis, 87-44.
Both the Flyers and Greyhounds will enter the contest with 1-1 records after they travelled to the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge last weekend where they both defeated Hillsdale and lost to Northern Michigan.
Last weekend, the Lakers used their usual stingy defense as well as an efficient offensive attack to blowout the Saints and Tritons. The Laker defenders allowed just 47.0 points per game on 32.4% shooting from the two teams combined while the GVSU offense generated 80.5 points per game and shot 54.4% from the field. The Lakers also outrebounded their opposition 75-60, out-blocked them 9-3, and tallied five more steals, 22-17.
Junior center
Cassidy Boensch had a big opening series, scoring 21.0 points per game (70.8% shooting) while pulling down 10.5 boards per contest to earn the first GLIAC South Division Player of the Week award of the season. Against Maryville, she recorded a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds before a 24-point, six rebound performance against UMSL. She's also 8-of-9 from the free throw line and has picked up three blocks, three assists, and three steals as well.
Fellow junior
Jenn DeBoer also posted an extremely efficient offensive attack in the Lakers' two games. She's averaging 17.0 points on 71.4% from the field while also chipping in six assists, a block, and a steal. Fellow backcourt teammate
Natalie Koenig is averaging 11.5 ppg in her team-high 28.5 minutes per games, also tallying six assists to go with three steals and two blocks.
Unsurprisingly,
Victoria Hedemark once again leads the team in takeaways with six steals on the year and ranks second on the squad with 5.0 rebounds per game.
Despite being in different conferences, the Lakers and Flyers are familiar foes, having squared off 20 times in program history with the Lakers leading the all-time series, 12-8. The teams have played in four of the last five seasons, including a 66-52 GVSU victory on Nov. 19 of last season.
Jessica Kelliher, who led the nation in scoring last season with 24.8 points per game, will be the Lakers main focus as they try to slow down a top national player of the year prospect. Kelliher, who led the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in scoring each of the last two seasons, has picked up right where she left off a year ago. Her 20.0 points per game leads the Flyer squad this season, as do her 9.5 rebounds. She's also doing it efficiently, shooting 66.7% from the floor and 72.7% from the charity stripe.
Kelliher isn't the Flyers only weapon however, as junior forward Rachel Hinders is pouring in 10.0 points per game while pulling down 7.5 boards. Kaitylyn Williams is a big threat from deep, hitting 5-of-12 (41.7%) from beyond the arc while also picking up a team-best five steals this season.
Similar to the Lakers' matchup with the Flyers, they are also familiar foes with Indianapolis. GVSU once again leads the all-time series, 8-3, including a 3-0 mark since the 2014-15 season and a 77-57 victory last season.
As a team, the Greyhounds are averaging 65.0 points on 45.7% shooting while allowing opponents to score a slightly higher 65.5 points but shoot 41.2% from the field. The UIndy offense stems from forward Emma Benoit, who is averaging 16.5 ppg and 5.0 rpg, and guard Taylor Drury, who is averaging 16.0 and 4.5. Drury is an efficient 46.2% shooter from three while Benoit is an even 50.0% from the floor.
Junior guard Laura Thomas is also a scoring threat the Lakers will have to look out for as she is averaging 12.5 points while nabbing a team-best five steals.
The Lakers will have the following holiday week free of any games but will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 24 in a 3:00 PM home contest against Concordia – Ann Arbor.
