GVSU Claims 4-0 Win Over Ashland, Friday Night

The Grand Valley State women's tennis team defeated Ashland 4-0 in the GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament quarterfinals at the Greater Midland Tennis Complex in Midland, Mich., on Friday evening. The Lakers who entered the tournament as the number one seed will now face the number four seed Wayne State in Saturday's (Oct. 27) semifinals, with first serve starting at 3:45 p.m.

In doubles, GVSU took the important point after they swept Ashland. Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos won 6-3 from the No. 1 position, followed by a 6-1 win from Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger from No. 2 doubles that gave the Lakers the point.

In singles, GVSU kept Ashland off the board as they closed out the match after they scored three more points. Ballard played strong from the No. 2 position and won 6-0, 6-1, while Canellopoulos tallied another point for the Lakers with a 6-4, 6-4 win from the No. 3 spot. Playing from the No. 5 position was Heiniger, who won 6-3, 6-1, that gave GVSU the victory.

Grand Valley State will now face Wayne State in the semifinals on Saturday (Oct. 27) with first serve starting at 3:45 p.m. In addition, this will be the second meeting between the two teams this season, as the Warriors previously won 4-3, during the regular season.
