GVSU Downs Northwood, 6-1, Captures Sixth GLIAC Title

Results

The Grand Valley State women's tennis (8-1 overall, 8-1 GLIAC) defeated Northwood (8-1, 8-1 GLIAC), 6-1, in an important GLIAC road match on Sunday afternoon. With the win today, the Lakers captured their second consecutive GLIAC Regular Season Title and sixth conference title in program history, named Co-Champions for the 2018 GLIAC Regular Season and received the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2018 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament.
 
In doubles, the Lakers claimed the important point that gave them the early lead after they won two of the three matches. The duo of Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos fell 6-1, from the No. 1 position, but Livia Christman and Marija Leko were able to win  6-1 from the No. 3 position. The Lakers earned the first point of the match after Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger were rewarded a win from No. 2 doubles, as their opponents had to retire due to injury.
 
GVSU continued its strong play into singles, as they won five out of the six matches. Griva, who has been perfect this season against GLIAC foes improved to 9-0 this season after she won 6-3, 7-6, from the No. 1 position, while Ballard who has split time with Griva between No. 1 and No. 2 singles, fell in a tough 6-3, 7-5 decision from the No. 2 slot. Leko and Canellopoulos both won in three sets from the No. 3 and No. 4 position. Leko dropped the first set 6-7, then came back and won the next two sets 6-3, 10-8, while Canellopoulos fell 1-6 in the first set, then powered her way back in the second and third set and won 6-3, 7-5. Playing out of the No. 5 position was Christman, who won 6-3, 6-4, while Heiniger also won from the No. 6 singles position by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
 
Grand Valley State will now prep for the 2018 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament, which takes place next weekend (Oct. 26-28) at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan. The Lakers will play as the No. 1 seed and face No. 8 Ashland on Friday (Oct. 26) with first serve starting at 6:45 p.m.
