The Grand Valley State women's tennis team continued its six match win streak this season after they defeated GLIAC foe Ashland, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Lakers improved to 6-0 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC, while the Eagles dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
In doubles, the Lakers claimed the important point after they won all three matches. The duo of
Vera Griva and
Marily Canellopoulos won 6-2, from the No. 1 position, followed by another win from
Livia Christman and
Marija Leko, who also won 6-2, that secured the doubles point for the Lakers from the No. 3 pairing. In addition,
Madison Ballard and
Nicole Heiniger also won from the No. 2 doubles position with a 6-4 victory.
The Lakers continued their strong play as they also swept the Eagles in singles. Ballard put on a dominate performance from the No. 2 position after she won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Canellopoulos earned the next point for GVSU as she won 6-2, 6-2, from the No. 4 slot, while Christman claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win from the No. 3 position. Â Playing from the No. 5 position was Heiniger, who won 6-0, 6-2, followed by the strong performance from Griva, who played from the No. 1 position and won 6-2, 6-2. GVSU completed the sweep after
Liv Hanover won from the No. 6 position by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Grand Valley State's final home match this fall is Sunday (Oct. 14), as they host GLIAC opponent Wayne State with first serve starting at 12:45 p.m. at the Premier Athletic Complex in Grandville, Michigan.
