The Grand Valley State Laker volleyball team bounced back on the second day of the Ferris State Invitational, going 2-0 after a victory over Cedarville Saturday (Sept. 2) night. The Lakers now sport a 2-2 record, which they will look to improve next weekend at the UIndy Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.

Earlier today, the Lakers defeated Missouri Western State by a 3-0 score and they followed that performance up with another big 3-0 victory. The Lakers lead the Yellow Jackets in kills (44-30), digs (50-41), assists (40-22), and blocks (5-4). The Lakers sported a .257 hitting percentage and were able to hold Cedarville to just .064 throughout the match.

Sophomore
Jayci Suseland led the team in kills with 11 while chipping in 4 digs while assisting on one block and hitting .375. Junior
Shannon Winicki had a season high nine kills while hitting .400 on the match. Junior
Hannah Murdock tallied eight kills while
Sydney Doby and
Staci Brower added seven each. Doby also tallied two solo blocks.

After falling behind 3-1 in the first set, the Lakers tied the score at 5-5 and traded points back and forth with Cedarville until the Yellow Jackets took a two point lead to make it 12-10. GVSU then used an 8-1 run courtesy of five Yellow Jacket errors, a kill by Murdock, and a kill and ace from Doby. Cedarville had a three-point run of their own before Grand Valley State countered with one of their own, two of which came on Murdock kills. With the score 20-17 in favor of the Lakers, the Yellow Jackets wouldn't come any closer as the Lakers snagged the set after a final kill by Doby for the 25-22 victory.

GVSU got off to a quick start in set two after they were able to win seven of the first ten points. During the run, Suseland tallied three kills, Murdock added one, and the Yellow Jackets hurt themselves again as they added three more errors. The Lakers would use runs of three points, two points, and five points to take a commanding 20-11 lead. Kills from
Emily Drenth and Brower gave the Lakers a 22-14 lead. Brower would then put down three kills, all from freshman
Ashlyn Kartes, to secure the Laker victory, 25-17.

The third set saw the two teams trading points back and forth, as they found themselves tied 8-8. GVSU then used another run, this time scoring six of the next seven points to take a 13-9 lead. During the seven points surge, Winicki would tally three of her nine total kills. After pushing the score to 19-13 before the Yellow Jackets would make one last push scoring four of the next six points to make it 22-17 in favor of the Lakers. GVSU would then use two Cedarville errors and a kill from Doby to capture the 3-0 match.

The Lakers will be back in action next Friday (Sept. 8) at the UIndy Invitational. GVSU will face off against Wheeling Jesuit and Clarion on Friday and Indianapolis and Winona State on Saturday (Sept. 9).Â
