The Grand Valley State Lakers dropped their second match of the day, falling to Upper Iowa by a 3-1 margin. GVSU dropped the first two sets before rebounding to win the third, but ultimately lost the match after a 20-25 fourth-set loss.
Â
The loss drops the Lakers to 0-2 on the season after they lost a hard fought match earlier this afternoon to Northwest Missouri State.
Â
Much like the first match of the day, the Lakers held the advantage in many statistical categories. GVSU led in kills (55-42), assists (52-39), digs (88-82), and tied in blocks (4-4). The Lakers also sported a .185 hitting percentage compared to Upper Iowa's .167.
Â
Hannah Murdock put up her second double-digit dig match after recording 10 digs in both matches today while also chipping in six kills. Sophomore
Jayci Suseland once again led the team in kills with a match high 22 while adding six digs.
Staci Brower and
Sydney Doby also tallied double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
Â
In the first set, GVSU took an early 4-3 lead after a Suseland kill only do have the Peacocks rattle off four straight to take a 7-4 lead. GVSU then dug its way back and tied the match 12-12 after another Suseland kill. The Peacocks would then take control of the set by going on an 11-3 run to win the set 25-17.
Â
In the second set, the Lakers fell behind early and found themselves down 6-10. GVSU was not able to recover from the early deficit and a couple of scoring runs ended the second set in a 25-14 Peacock victory.
Â
The Lakers found new life in the third set after trailing 1-3. GVSU was able to go on a 15-3 run to take a commanding 16-5 lead. The Lakers then went on a five point run, capped off by a
Jillian Butsavich kill from Doby to take the 21-6 lead. GVSU would go on to win the set 25-10 after a final kill from Suseland.
Â
Unfortunately for the Lakers, they were not able to carry the dominance over to the next set, which saw them fall 25-20. The teams battled back and forth to see the score tied at 10, only for Upper Iowa to go on a six-point run and take a 16-10 lead. GVSU fought back to bring the score to 18-22, but the Peacocks would score two straight to move ahead 24-18. The Lakers gave one final push and scored two straight to bring the score to 24-20, but a kill by the Peacocks Anna Winter halted the comeback.
Â
Senior setter
Katie Olson tallied a match-high 41 assists to go along with her eight digs and one ace.
Â
The Lakers will be back in action tomorrow (Sept. 2) as they face off against Missouri Western State at noon and Cedarville at 6:00 PM.Â
