XENIA, Ohio-- The Grand Valley State baseball team gave up three runs to Tiffin, the last of which would be the game-winning score, in the fifth inning in what would ultimately be a 4-3 loss to the Dragons. The Lakers had taken a 3-1 lead over the Dragons in the top of the frame before the Dragons surged back in the bottom of the inning to take the game at Grady's Field in Xenia, Ohio as part of the 2017 GLIAC Baseball Tournament.
The Lakers surrendered an early run to the Dragons in the first inning, but tied the game up at one apiece in the top of the second inning, as
Johnny Nate singled to drive in
Austin LaDoux, who had reached on a single.
After two scoreless frames in which Laker starter
Tate Brawley (5-4) and Dragons starter Mike Boswell each stymied the opposition's batters, the Lakers took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth. After Nate reached on a fielder's choice which retired
Connor Glick at second base,
Keith Browning took a 2-1 pitch from Boswell and launched it over the left field fence to plated Nate and himself for a 3-1 lead. The Lakers threatened to add more runs with consecutive base hits after the home run, but a timely double play ball got the Dragons out of the inning without further damage.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Dragons pushed across three runs off of Brawley to take a 4-3 lead in the game, which they would not relinquish. The Lakers got two men abroad in the ninth inning off Tiffin closer Kevin Boerst, but could not find the hit to bring them home.
Brawley pitched 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six batters. Browning notched two hits, drove in two runs and scored another.
The Lakers will now face sixth-seeded Hillsdale at 2:00 pm tomorrow to decide their tournament fate.
