INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The #5 seed Grand Valley State Laker women's tennis team took down #4 seed Tiffin in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Region Tournament by a score of 5-3. With the victory, the Lakers move on to face host school Indianapolis, with the winner earning a trip down to Altamonte Springs, Fla. for the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship Tournament.
The Lakers managed to snag two out of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. In the No. 2 doubles spot, the Laker duo of
Alexa Sweeney and
Aimee Moccia defeated Emily Sim and Adel Musina by a score of 9-7. Also winning a close 9-7 match was the pairing of
Abby Perkins and Livia Christman, as they bested Rachelmary Brozovich and Bianca Avram in the No. 3 spot.
With the 2-1 lead heading into singles, the Lakers had to win three out of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Earning the first of those three victories was sophomore
Nicole Heiniger out of the No. 6 spot, who took down Brozovich by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Christman would earn the second singles victory out of the No. 5 spot as she defeated Aimee Kaye by a 6-3, 6-4 margin. Securing the victory for Grand Valley was Moccia out of the No. 3 spot. With Grand Valley hanging on to a 4-3 lead, Moccia bested Emily Sim 6-4, 6-2.
The Midwest Region Final between #5 Grand Valley State and #1 Indianapolis will be played on Tuesday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m. The match will be played at Center Grove High School in Greenwood Ind. Should there be inclement weather, the match will be moved inside to the UIndy Tennis Center on the campus of Indianapolis.
