Lakers Split GLIAC Twinbill At Wayne State

Won 6-1 in 11 innings, lost 1-0

Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader Saturday (April 29) at Wayne State, winning the first game 6-1 in 11 innings, but dropping the second game by a 1-0 score. GVSU (27-17, 15-11 GLIAC) will complete the four-game series against Wayne State on Sunday (April 30) beginning at 12 noon.

Game one was scheduled for seven innings, but went 11 before the Lakers scored five in the top half of the 11th. Wayne State scored one run in the bottom of the first, but was then held scoreless for 10 consecutive frames. GVSU left seven on base through the first six innings and trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the seventh. Senior SS Johnny Nate reached on an error that allowed him to move to second base and then advanced to third on a sac bunt by RF Alex Young. 2B Josh Smith was retired via a strikeout, but senior 3B Anthony Villar came up big with two-strike, RBI single to center to plate Nate. Senior closer Matt Williams got out of a jam with a bases loaded strike out in the ninth and sophomore reliever Brendan Nearing induced a bases loaded line out to left in the bottom of the 10th.

The Lakers broke open the game with five runs on three hits and two Warrior errors in the 11th. Junior C Austin Ladoux opened the 11th with a double to left center and CF Keith Browning, attempting to move Ladoux with a sac bunt, reached on an error that allowed Ladoux to score. Browning moved to third on a passed ball and Ryan Blake-Jones was hit by a pitch. Browning scored on a throwing error by the pitcher on Nate's fielders choice that allowed him to advance to second and Blake-Jones to third. Young came through with a clutch two RBI single to center to up the Laker lead to 5-1. Young then stole second and scored on another two-strike single off the bat of Villar. Nearing finished off the win with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the 11th.

Junior Ryan Arnold was outstanding, yielding just one run on two hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Williams struck out four and gave up one hit in two innings of work and Nearing picked up the win with two scoreless innings. Young was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Villar was 2-for-6 with two RBI.

The second game was a quick one as Wayne State scored the only run of the contest in the fourth inning on two hits. The Lakers managed just two hits and were unable to get anything going with six walks. WSU got an inning ending double play in the second after back-to-back one-out walks in the second and left two on base in the fifth after a Brody Andrews walk and a Nate single. Young opened the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt from Villar. LF Seth Johnson and Ladoux reached on back-to-back walks to load the bases, but an inning ending double play ended the scoring threat.

Tate Brawley yielded one run on six hits with six strikeouts for the Lakers on the hill.
