DETROIT, Mich.-- The Grand Valley State baseball team split a doubleheader with Wayne State on Sunday after splitting Saturday's twin bill as well. GVSU dropped the opening game 5-0, before rallying for a big 11-1 win in the nightcap.
In the first game, Wayne State scored a pair of runs in the first frame and three more in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead and never let up in taking the opening game from GVSU. Five different Lakers notched a hit in the loss.
Game two was a far different affair, as the Lakers scored a pair of second inning runs off of a solo home run by
Austin LaDoux and an RBI double from
Ryan Blake-Jones. In the third, GVSU doubled their lead via an RBI single from LaDoux and a Warrior error following a
Brody Andrews double that brought home LaDoux. A three run home run to center field by
Seth Johnson in the fifth made the score 7-0 in favor of the visitors.
After a Warrior error allowed an eighth run to score, Andrews drove in two more runs in the sixth inning to make the score 10-1, and the Lakers would get one more run in the seventh frame off an error to round out the scoring.
Mitch Ashcraft (3-3) pitched eight terrific innings on the mound in the win, allowing just one run on five hits, walking out three and striking out three.
Matt Williams pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Johnson led GVSU with three hits, a pair of runs score and three runs batted in, while LaDoux drove in a pair of runs and scored two more while notching two hits. Blake-Jones tallied three hits and drove in one run on the day.
