Lakers Drop Final Spring Trip Match to Pace

Lakers are now 1-4 after 14-9 defeat

SPARKS, Md. -- The #12 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team (1-4) suffered their second defeat of the week in their spring trip to Maryland with a 14-9 loss at the hands of #20 Pace University (1-1) on Sunday at the US Lacrosse Facility in Sparks, Md. The Lakers fell victim to a low-scoring first-half as Pace was able to out-score GVSU 8-2 in the first half.

Scoring in Sunday's game was hard to come by in the first 10 minutes of the game, as the first goal of the game came from Pace's Courtney Pabst at the 22:09 mark. Carly Shisler would bring the Lakers back even at 1-1 at the 20:38 mark in the first half. Pace would go on to score three unanswered goals before a Meghan Datema free position goal drew the score back to 4-2 at the 10:15 mark in the first half. The Setters would go on a tear in the final 10 minutes of the half, pulling away to an 8-2 lead going into the break.

After the half, it looked as though Pace would go on to a very convincing win as the Setters pulled away to a 11-2 lead around the 25 minute mark. Grand Valley State showed resilience, however, and would outscore the Setters over the final 25 minutes 7 to 3. Meggan Loyd kicked off the second half scoring at 24:12 to bring the score to 11-3. Pace came back with a trio of goals to draw away to 14-3. Kira Dosenberry would get on the board at 12:23 and Abbi O'Neal would draw the Lakers back within nine at the 10:03 mark.

The next three Laker goals would come in a flurry as Datema would score a goal at the 6:15 mark off of an assist from Loyd. Maria D'Angelo followed that up with a free-position goal at the 5:43 mark and Dosenberry netted her second goal at the 5:16 mark. Dosenberry would connect for the final goal at the 2:25 mark in the second half to bring the Lakers to just a five goal deficit.

GVSU will play their next game in Elkins, WV on Tuesday as they take on Davis & Elkins at 4:00 pm.
