The Grand Valley State women's basketball team is set to travel to Hammond, Ind. for a 2:00 PM ET (1:00 CT) GLIAC showdown against the Pride of Purdue Northwest this Saturday (Dec. 16). The Lakers, currently 8-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, split last weekend against #18 Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. The Lakers lost in overtime, 85-81, against the #18 ranked Huskies at the DeltaPlex Arena on Thursday (Dec. 7) before bouncing back for a 66-59 double overtime victory against Northern Michigan at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Saturday (Dec. 9). Dating back to Nov. 30, the Lakers have played four GLIAC games, three of which have gone to overtime.
Five separate Lakers scored in double-digits in the tough overtime loss to Michigan Tech last weekend, led by Parmley with 21 and a new career high 19 points from
Korynn Hincka. The teams were back and forth all night, with neither squad ever holding a double-digit lead and most of the final three quarters were within just one or two possessions. The Huskies had an impressive shooting performance, hitting 54.2% of their shots, against one of the GLIAC's stingiest defenses in the Lakers, including shooting 70.0% in the second half. The Lakers shot 41.8% from the floor (28-67) and hit 5 of their 11 three-pointers while also going 20-24 from the free throw line.
The Lakers double overtime matchup against Northern Michigan didn't feature much offense to start the contest, as it took just over seven minutes for either team to reach double-digit points. After the Lakers erased a five point Wildcat lead after the first quarter, the teams went bucket for bucket and were tied to end the second, third, and fourth quarters as well as the first overtime. The Lakers finally strung together a few shots in double overtime to secure the victory. Once again Parmley paced the Laker offense with 23 points, while
Jenn DeBoer set the new career high this time, scoring 18 points.
Overall, Parmley leads a Laker offense that ranks fourth in the GLIAC in points per game, averaging 73.8 in their four GLIAC games. The senior is scoring 15.2 points per game on the season and shooting exactly 50.0% from the field (53-106). Not far behind Parmley are guards
Jenn DeBoer and
Natalie Koenig, who are averaging 12.9 and 11.6 points per contest, respectively. The Lakers starting center,
Korynn Hincka, is also averaging 10+ points per game this season, as she is sitting at 10.1 and also leads the Lakers in rebounds, pulling down 8.2 boards per contest which ranks third in the GLIAC.
The Pride are still getting acclimated to GLIAC and Division II competition as they were previously a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Purdue Northwest is currently sitting at 1-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference after earning a win in its first ever GLIAC game against Davenport before falling to Wayne State, Northern Michigan, and Michigan Tech.
Offensively, the Pride are led by Shae Rhonehouse, as the sophomore guard is averaging 12.8 points per game an 4.6 rebounds per game. Fellow guard Lanie Allen is the other PNW player averaging double digits per contest. The freshman is sitting at 10.4 points per game while also pulling down 4.6 rebounds. Ellie Michalski has been big on the boards for the Pride. The senior forward is pulling down 9.5 rebound per contest, which is tops in the league, while also averaging 9.1 points.
Following Saturday's game, the Lakers have one more matchup before the holiday break as they are set to host Aquinas on Tuesday, Dec. 19th. Tipoff for that game is set for 12:00 PM.
