The Grand Valley State women's basketball team fell in a hard fought battle to the Wolverines of the University of Michigan, 65-43. After the first quarter, the Lakers led the Wolverines 18-15 but the offense stalled the final three quarters, scoring a combined 25 points. This was the seventh meeting between the Lakers and the Wolverines and the first since the 1979-80 season.

GVSU took a quick 4-0 lead after a jumper by
Jenn DeBoer was followed up by a layup from
Taylor Parmley at the 6:52 mark.
Korynn Hincka widened the Laker lead to five after she followed up a jumper with the first three-pointer of the season for GVSU to give the Lakers the 9-4 lead. The Wolverines took their first lead of the contest on a three-pointer from Katelynn Flaherty to give Michigan the 13-11 lead. The Lakers regained the lead with :39 seconds left in the first quarter on two free throws for the 18-15 advantage heading into the second frame.

Grand Valley State opened up the second quarter with a layup from Parmley to take a five-point lead at 20-15. Michigan took their second lead of the contest after a layup by Nicole Munger gave the Wolverines the 23-22 lead. Michigan answered a DeBoer three-pointer with their own triple to regain the 26-25 lead with just over four minutes to play. The Wolverine defense would then step up and force five Laker turnovers and Michigan would enter the half with a 36-27 lead.

The Lakers opened up the third quarter with back-to-back buckets from Parmley and Hincka to shrink the Wolverine lead to just four at 36-32. After Michigan took a 39-32 lead on a three pointer from Munger with just under nine minutes to play, the teams would go scoreless for nearly three mintues, before the Wolverines converter layup. Megan Belke layup brought the score to 41-34 in favor of Michigan, the Wolverines closed the third quarter on a six to one run.

The fourth quarter opened up with a 12-3 run by the Wolverines, which pushed their lead to 55-37 with just over five minutes left to play. Neither team scored again until the 3:44 mark, when the Wolverines scored three points in just a few seconds after they grabbed an offensive rebound off of a missed free throw and put back a layup. Michigan closed out the fourth quarter on a seven to six run for the 65-43 final score.

Parmley led the way for the Lakers offensively, as the redshirt junior posted 11 points after shooting 3-11 from the field and going a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. Hincka tallied 8 points of her own after going 3-8 from the floor and 1-1 from behind the arc. DeBoer led the way in assists, posting three to go along with her seven points.

The Lakers will be back in action Sunday, November 5 in their final scrimmage before the regular season as they host Olivet in GVSU Fieldhouse Arena at 1:00 p.m.Â
