The Grand Valley State women's tennis team won its eighth consecutive match after a thrilling 5-4 victory over Wayne State on Sunday. The win now pushes the Lakers to 8-0 overall and in the GLIAC, this season.
The Lakers and Warriors first battled it out in doubles action to open the contest. WSU won the first doubles match as Abby Perkins and Livia Christman fell in a tough 8-2 match at the No. 3 doubles position. GVSU's Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger dropped a close 8-5 decision from No. 2 doubles, but Alexa Sweeney and Aimee Moccia were able to add a point for the Lakers, as the pair won 8-2 at the No. 1 pairing.
Grand Valley State made the comeback in singles actions, as the Lakers won four out of six matches. Ballard, battled hard at the No. 1 singles and won 7-5, 6-2, followed by another victory from Perkins at the No. 4 spot. Perkins dropped the first set 5-7, before winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-4. Moccia won at the No. 3 position, as she fell in the first set 5-7, but came back and won next two sets 6-3, 6-2. The Warriors claimed another point at No. 2 singles, as Sweeney fell in three set match 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3). The Lakers tallied their fifth point of the contest as Olivia Hanover won at the No. 5 position 6-2, 7-5, before Heiniger was defeated at the No. 6 spot ((1-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8).
The Lakers return home next week as they will conclude their regular season with two more GLIAC matchups against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 21), followed by Northwood on Sunday (Oct. 22).
