The Grand Valley State women's tennis team won its seventh consecutive match after a 9-0 victory over Ashland on Saturday morning. The Lakers (7-0 overall) will conclude their three-match road trip on Sunday (Oct. 15) when they travel to Detroit, Mich., to battle Wayne Sate (6-1 overall) for a 10 a.m. start.
The Lakers were able to sweep Ashland in doubles actions with three strong victories to start the match. Aimee Moccia and Alexa Sweeney played from the No. 1 pairing and claimed a tough 9-7 decision, while Madison Ballard and Nicole Heiniger played from the No. 2 doubles and tallied an 8-2 win. Abbey Perkins and Livia Christman added another point for GVSU after an 8-0 victory at No. 3 pairing.
The success continued for Grand Valley State in singles action with six lopsided victories. Moccia claimed a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles, while Perkins played from the No. 2 spot and won 6-1, 6-0. The Lakers continued their dominance as Olivia Hanover posted an 6-2, 6-4 win from the No. 3 position, and Christman won in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) from the No. 4 spot. Heiniger played from the No. 5 singles spot and won 6-4, 6-1, followed by a Rachel Sumner victory from the No. 6 position, where she won 6-1, 6-2.
