PAINESVILLE, Ohio.—A very efficient shooting performance carried the Grand Valley State men's basketball team to victory at Lake Erie College on Saturday afternoon, their second straight victory. GVSU improves to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in GLIAC play with the win.
Justin Greason had a double-double with career-high 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, as he was one of three Lakers to score in double figures.
Trevin Alexander had 13 points and
Luke Ryskamp, 11. The Lakers shot 54.9 percent (28-51) from the field in the game and 63.6 percent (14-22) from the free throw line, both marks above the team's season average.
Greason got the Lakers going early, scoring three straight buckets in the opening minutes of the half. After a dunk by
Juwan Starks, a pair of free throws by Greason gave the Lakers an early 10-4 lead at the 16:13 mark of the half. Lake Erie then went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 11-10, which the Lakers countered with five straight points to go back on top. After a
Ben Lubitz triple put the Lakers up 18-14 with 11:39 left to play, the two teams combined for a three minute scoring drought. After some back and forth action from the teams, a Greason layup, his ninth and tenth points of the afternoon, put the Lakers up 26-21 with 517 left in the half.
The Storm then went on an 8-0 run, taking a 29-26 lead with just over two minutes left to play, looking to take control of a small halftime lead. The Lakers have other plans, however, getting back-to-back baskets by
Chris Dorsey and Lubitz, a layup by
Drake Baar and a triple by
Trevin Alexander to close out the half scoring on four straight possessions. The flurry of baskets turned a three point deficit into a six point lead, 35-29, as the teams headed into the halftime break.
Opening the second half on an 8-3 run, the Storm cut GVSU's lead down to one point, 38-37, with 17:39 left to play. The teams then traded buckets back and forth for several minutes, neither extending a lead beyond five points. With 12:47 left to play, GVSU's
Zach West scored an old-fashioned three point play, then hauled down a defensive rebound on the other end, leading to a Dorsey layup and a four point Laker lead, 51-47. That sequence was the opening of a 16-0 Laker run that would stretch over the next 4:40 of play, and end with the Lakers up 62-47 with eight minutes left to play.
That late run sealed the game for GVSU, as the Storm would get no closer than 11 points the remainder of the way. A Brogan Scott layup would be the Storm's final basket of the game, and bring the score to the final of 73-62.
GVSU outrebounded the home squad 31-23, and held advantages in points off turnovers (17-7), second chance points (9-3) and bench scoring (26-8). GVSU held the lead in the game for over 34 minutes of play.
The Lakers return to action with a road contest against Northwood on Thursday, January 12
