Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Five Lakers Score in Double Figures to Lead Rout of Timberwolves, 93-78

MIDLAND, Mich.—  A season-best shooting performance propelled the Grand Valley State men's basketball team to a blowout victory at Northwood University on Thursday night, moving the Lakers to 10-5 on the season, and 5-3 in the GLIAC. All five Laker starters scored in double figures—two on perfect shooting from the field—as GVSU shot a blazing 64.9 percent (37-57) from the field and reached a new season high in points.

Trevin Alexander led the way with a career high 21 points (8-13 FG), eight rebounds and five assists. Myles Miller also set a career high with 19 points on a perfect 8-8 effort from the floor, while Luke Ryskamp (19 points), Justin Greason (12 pts, 6-6 FG) and Juwan Starks (10 points) all reached double figures.

GVSU started the game off in brilliant fashion, connecting on seven of their first eight shots to go ahead 16-7 just five minutes into the first half. GVSU built up an 11-point lead on a layup by Chris Dorsey with 12:55 left before seeing that lead slowly dwindle down to just four over the next three minutes. The teams would battle back and forth for several minutes, with GVSU pushing the lead back into double-digits (10) briefly on a triple by Alexander with 7:45 remaining in the half. After the Timberwolves cut the lead down to 33-29 with 4:58 remaining, the Lakers got a Starks trifecta and a Miller layup, then minutes later got a pair of free throws from Ryskamp and a layup by Zach West. That 9-0 run put the Lakers up by 13, 42-29 with 1:29 remaining.  With a minute remaining, the teams exchanged buckets before a Miller three-pointer closed out the half and gave the Lakers a 47-30 lead at the break.

In building to the team's best shooting performance since a January 17th, 2007 win over Marygrove, in which GVSU shot 66.7 percent, the team stayed hot in the second half as they had been in the early going. As he had done to score the game's first points, Greason opened the second half with a jumper, which Ryskamp followed with one of his own to push the lead to 21 points, 51-30.  Two minutes later, Greason hit another jumper, which was matched by Miller to push the lead to 25 with 17:17 left. The Lakers continued to scorch the nets, led by 16 second-half points from Alexander, and didn't allow Northwood to get closer than 12 points the rest of the way, coasting to an easy 15 point victory.

Grand Valley State bullied the Timberwolves in the paint, amassing a 46-18 advantage in points in the paint. Additionally, they held an 11-0 advantage in fast break points and a 24-19 advantage in points off turnovers. Miller led the Lakers with a team-high seven assists, tying a career high in that category, as well as stealing a career high four passes.  Greason blocked four shots, a single-game best for him.

GVSU's next game is against Lake Superior State on Saturday, which is set for a 3:00 PM tip-off.
