ASHLAND, Ohio.—The Grand Valley State baseball team played just half of the four weekend games in a series at Ashland this weekend, but got the better of the Eagles on Sunday, winning 8-5. The win evened the series at 1-1, where it will stay, as weather forced the cancellation of one game on Saturday and one on Sunday.
Kyle Lawson (5-1) picked up his fifth win in as many starts, but struggled early, giving up a pair of runs in the first inning. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits, walking four and striking out one.
The Eagles struck first, tagging Lawson for a pair of early runs off of a double and triple. After that, however, Lawson worked through four straight scoreless frames, while the Lakers offense got going to give him some run support.
After
Jason Ribecky led off the fourth inning with a single, he advanced to second off of a double by
Anthony Villar. Catcher
Connor Glick then singled to left field, driving in Ribecky and Villar to tie the game. Glick advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Josh Griffith, and then to third on a bunt single by
Josh Smith. He then came home to score on a fielder's choice hit by
Johnny Nate.
Seth Johnson then tripled, scoring both Smith and Nate for a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Lakers struck again, building off of another
Jason Ribecky leadoff single.
Anthony Villar and
Connor Glick both reached, loading the bases for
Josh Griffith, who hit an RBI single to score Ribecky and Villar and get the lead to 7-2. The next batter up,
Josh Smith beat out a bunt single to score Glick and get the Laker lead to 8-2.
The Eagles got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run home run, and added a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth, but were shut down in the ninth inning by Matt Willliams, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Glick, Griffith and Johnson each finished with a pair of RBI's apiece, while Smith and Nate drove in a run apiece.
Tim Tarter and
Zach Anderson each came on in relief for the Lakers, pitching 1.2 and 1.0 innings respectively.
Grand Valley State returns to action on Wednesday, as the team faces Lewis University at GVSU Baseball Field in Allendale, Michigan as part of Heritage Week. The Lakers and Flyer's earlier meeting this season, at the Midwest Regional Crossover, was canceled due to inclement weather.
