Lakers Split Make-up Doubleheader Versus Wayne State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Grand Valley State baseball team rallied to a 9-6 comeback victory over the Wayne State Warriors in the first game of Monday's make up doubleheader, before dropping the second game by a 16-3 score.

The games had originally been scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 9th, but were postponed due to the weather. With the GVSU baseball diamond still soggy from the weekend snowfall, the games were played at Davenport University at the Farmer's Insurance Athletic Complex.

In the first game, the Lakers (14-10-1) gave up the early lead to the Warriors, as a pair of RBI's singles plated two runs. GVSU would answer back in the second inning, as catcher Brody Andrews got ahold of a pitch and sent it over the right field wall for his first round-tripper of the season. The home run cut the Warrior lead in half, but only for a brief period, as the Warriors would strike again in the next inning.

The Warriors would get their third run off of a Laker error, and then added a fourth and fifth run off of an RBI single and double, respectively.

In the fifth inning, however, the lid was lifted for the Lakers, and they would rally back. After Seth Johnson, Alex Young and Johnny Nate all got on board for the Lakers to load the bases, first baseman Matt Williams delivered a line drive into the gap for his first triple of the season, a base clearing knock to make it 5-4. Williams then scored on a passed ball walk to Zack Berry. Anthony Villar then singled to advance Berry to second, and advanced to third on an RBI single by Connor Glick, which scored Berry. Villar would come home to score on a fielder's choice hit by Josh Smith, and Glick came around to score on an RBI single by Johnny Nate one batter later.

The final tally for the inning was seven runs on five hits, with the Lakers surging from four runs down to take a three run lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The Warriors added one more run in the sixth inning with a solo home run, but the Lakers score one of their own in the bottom of the inning, as Andrews hit an RBI single to left field to score Berry, who had walked.

Matt Williams then came on to pitch the seventh frame for a chance at his eighth save. After surrendering a leadoff double, he struck out the next three batters, in order, to end the game in a 9-6 Laker victory.

Brett Nearing (1-0) earned the victory on the mound for Grand Valley State, pitching 1.2 innings in relief of embattled starter Josh Griffith, who received a no decision. Nearing surrendered one hit and one walk while facing six batters.

Williams finished with one hit, the clutch triple, a run scored and three RBI for the game, while Andrews had two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Johnny Nate was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, the Lakers lost by a score of 16-3. Kyle Lawson (5-2) was tabbed with the loss on the mound. Jason Ribecky drove in two runs with a double.
