#11 Lakers Cruise Past Lake Erie for 16-4 Win

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the 11th-ranked Lakers ran away with a 16-4 win over Lake Erie at GVSU Lacrosse Stadium in the first of a doubleheader on Friday. The win puts GV at 11-4 overall and 9-1 in the GLIAC.

Erika Neumen and Danielle Tunnell both tallied four goals to lead the team, while Tunnell dished out an assist to give her a team-best five points. Ashley Bailey scored a hat-trick off the bench, and Carlyn Shisler scored a brace off the bench. Ryan Skomial, Kira Dosenberry, and Carolyn Kraus all dished out a pair of assists in the win over the Storm (6-9, 4-7 GLIAC).

Meghan Datema pulled down eight of the team's 17 draw control wins in addition to scoring one goal. And Caitlin Wojichowski caused a game-high three caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls. Brianna DeMilia stopped eight shots in all 60 minutes in the net and picked up four loose balls.

The Lakers got out to an early lead after Dosenberry opened the day's scoring and Neumen cashed in on passes from Tunnell and Dosenberry with 25:51 still on the clock. Lake Erie got on the board at 18:43, but Skomial fed Shisler 32 seconds later and Datema buried a shot to make it 5-1.

Consecutive Lake Erie goals brought the deficit to two, but back-to-back Tunnell goals in the final two minutes – one unassisted and one from the stick of Dosenberry – gave GVSU a 7-3 lead going into the break.

Three Laker goals inside the first five minutes, with two from Tunnell and one from Shisler and Neumen, upped the lead to eight right out of the gate in the second half. Kraus assisted with Neumen's fourth goal of the game at 18:32 to put the Lakers up 12-3.

The Storm scored their first and only goal of the second half at 14:50, but Grand Valley State closed out the final 12 minutes of the game with four unanswered goals. Bailey scored three consecutive goals at 11:22, 5:41, and 4:01, and Kelley Fitzgerald tickled the twine at 2:06 for the game's final goal.

Grand Valley State peppered the Lake Erie goalkeepers with 30 total shots and 29 shots on goal, while only allowing the Storm to take 13 shots. GVSU also dominated in ground balls (24-13) and draw controls (17-5), and were a perfect 12-12 on clear attempts while limiting Lake Erie to just 13-22.

Grand Valley State will face Lake Erie again at 7 pm at the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium in the second of a doubleheader.
