ALLENDALE, Mich. – In the second game of a doubleheader, #11 Grand Valley State took control of the game early with an efficient offense and lock-down defense as the Lakers walked away with an easy 19-2 win over Lake Erie Friday evening. The win, their 13
th consecutive home win, the Lakers improve to 12-4 overall and 10-1 against conference opponents.
15 different players scored at least one point in the big win this evening, with 11 different Lakers tallying at least one goal and 10 players recording at least one assist.
Erika Neumen once again led the way as she recorded five points on four goals and one assist. Neumen's four goals give her 135 for her career, tying her with
Rachel Leibovitz for the most goals scored in a career in school history.
Meghan Datema registered four points on a hat-trick and one assist, while
Kira Dosenberry,
Carolyn Kraus, and
Danielle Tunnell all tallied two goals each in the win.
Chelsey Bishop and
Meggan Loyd both led the team with a pair of assists.
Datema led all players with seven draw control wins, while Dosenberry caused a team-best two turnovers, and
Kelly Leibovitz picked up three ground balls.
Brianna DeMilia saw 50:44 of action and made six saves to earn the win. Seeing the field for the first time this season was
Madison Barnes, as the freshman played the final 9:16 and recorded one save.
Bishop connected with Neumen 21 seconds into the game to kick off the scoring as GV would put 12 in the back of the net in the first half. Neumen would score all four of her goals in the first half, while Datema and Kraus tallied two of their three in the first half. Tunnell, Dosenberry,
Ryan Skomial, and
Carlyn Shisler all put a goal on the board. Bishop tallied both assists in the first half, while Skomial, Datema, Neumen, Dosenberry and
Katie Tomlinson all dished out one assist each in the opening stanza.
Lake Erie (6-10, 4-8 GLIAC), finally snuck a shot past DeMilia 46 seconds into the second half but GV would reel off the next four goals as head coach
Alicia Groveston began rotating more of her non-starters into the game. Datema completed her hat-trick at 19:06, while Tunnell scored her second at 20:26 and Dosenberry scored her second as well at 10:00 from a pass by
Nicki Tague, and
Kelley Fitzgerald found the back of the net for her first of the evening.
The Storm put a shot past Barnes to make it 16-2 with 7:07 still to play, and the Lakers ran out the game with three straight goals. Loyd scored her goal at 4:11, while
Kallie LaValle cashed in a pass by Loyd at 2:39, and
Maria D'Angelo buried the game's final goal from a pass by
Carolina Reis.
GVSU controlled every major statistical category against the Storm in tonight's contest. GV outshot Lake Erie 27-12, picked up 12 ground balls to their opponent's eight, held a firm 14-9 advantage in draw controls, and committed only six turnovers to Lake Erie's nine. The Lakers also limited the Storm to just one free-position attempt, while drawing five of their own and converting on three.
Grand Valley State wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Apr. 30) when they host Walsh (5-11, 0-11 GLIAC) at 6 pm, where the Lakers will honor their six graduating seniors prior to the starting line-ups.
