Lakers Drop First Game of Series to Ashland, Second Game Cancelled

ASHLAND, Ohio— The Grand Valley State baseball team jumped out to an early lead in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Ashland and held it comfortably for several innings, surrendering it late and losing a close game, 4-2, in seven innings. The second game of the doubleheader was summarily canceled due to rain, and the teams will clash again in tomorrow's doubleheader as scheduled.

The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. A leadoff triple by center fielder Alex Young led to the first run, as Young came home on a groundout by Seth Johnson. Matt Williams and Jason Ribecky both drew walks, and Williams would then come home to score after an RBI single by catcher Connor Glick.

After the Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run, the two teams exchanged a pair of scoreless frames in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Eagles scored three runs to take a 4-2 lead late in the game.

Grand Valley State would load the bases in the top of the sixth inning to get the go ahead run on base, but were unable to bring in any of the runners, and continued to trail, 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Lakers once again managed to load the bases, but could not bring home any baserunners to cut the deficit.

Josh Griffith (1-2) was charged with the tough luck loss, surrendering just four runs (two earned)  on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. He walked four and struck out four.

Glick finished with two of the Lakers four hits, as the team fell to 12-9-1 on the season, and 3-2 in the GLIAC.
