FINDLAY, Ohio –
Erika Neumen's eight goals helped lead ninth-ranked Grand Valley State to a dominating 21-8 victory over conference rival Findlay Friday afternoon at the Armstrong Sports Complex. With their sixth consecutive win of the season, GVSU improves to 8-3 overall and 6-0 in the GLIAC.
Coupled with her one assist, Neumen tallied nine points to place her in a four-way tie for second for the most points in a game in school history and in sole possession of second for most goals in a game in school history. The high-scoring junior also moved up in the school's record book for other statistical categories. Neumen improved to second for most goals and fifth in most points in a career with 116 and 134, respectively.
Chelsey Bishop also had another big day as the junior attacker dished out four assists, giving her 28 on the year and putting her in a tie for third-most assists in a single season. Bishop also had one goal to give her five points on the afternoon.
Danielle Tunnell tallied a hat-trick in today's win and
Meghan Datema scored a brace in today's win over the Oilers (6-7, 3-5 GLIAC).
Ryan Skomial tallied one goal and two assists today, while
Carolyn Kraus and
Katie Tomlinson recorded a goal and an assist each.
Neumen led the team with five of their 13 draw control wins, while
Kelly Leibovitz led the team with five ground balls and tied with
Carlyn Shisler for a team-leading two caused turnovers.
Sarah Zwilsky played the full 60 minutes today and tied a school record for most saves in a single game with 15 along with on ground ball.
It was
Kira Dosenberry who opened today's scoring with the first goal of the game at 28:38, and it was followed a minute later by a goal from Neumen in a player-advantage situation, while Kraus' tally made it 3-0 eight minutes into the opening stanza.
An unassisted goal from Datema was sandwiched between a pair of Oiler goals, but GV scored the next five goals from Neumen, Datema, Skomial, Tomlinson and
Kelley Fitzgerald to put the score at 9-2 before another Findlay goal at 12:37. After an Oiler goal made it an eight-point deficit, one goal from Tunnell and two from Neumen closed out the half with a 15-4 lead in favor of the visiting Lakers.
Findlay started off the second half with three straight goals to make it 15-7 with just over 20 minutes left in the game. But any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dashed when a player-down goal from Tunnell kicked off a five-goal run to put the game well out of reach. Two goals from Neumen, along with a goal by Bishop and one from
Meggan Loyd, made it a 20-7 game with 9:34 on the clock and counting. Findlay scored their eighth goal of the afternoon with 4:13 on the clock, while
Maria D'Angelo cashed in for the final goal of the contest with 13 seconds left before the final horn sounded.
The Lakers held an advantage over their competitors in nearly every major statistic today. They outshot the Oilers 34-28, picked up 26 ground balls to Findlay's 16, and committed 14 turnovers while the Oilers gave the ball away 17 times. The only statistic where they didn't win was draw controls, which Findlay took 17-13. And while they allowed 16 free-position attempts, Findlay was only able to capitalize on four of those opportunities while GV was 2-4 from the arch.
Grand Valley State hits the field again when they take on conference heavyweight Tiffin (7-5, 5-2 GLIAC) on Saturday at 6 pm.
