Lakers Open Russmatt Invitational With Hard Fought Tie, 4-4

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The Grand Valley State baseball team played a close game against Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday as part of the Russmatt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. So close, in fact that neither team was able to win the game in nine innings, and after five full extra innings were played, the game still did not have a winner.

The game was called off at 6:14 p.m due to limited visibility, but there is a possibility that the contest may be resumed later in the week, if schedules allow.

After Ohio Dominican scored one run in the bottom of the first inning, the Lakers would score a pair of runs in the second inning to take the early lead. A Panther run pushed across in the sixth inning would tie the game back up at 2-2, and the teams traded runs in the eighth inning to get the score to 3-3.

After a scoreless ninth inning, the game headed to extra innings, and GVSU would score in the 10th inning to go up 4-3. The Panthers would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th, however, and neither team would score after that.

Zach Anderson had a strong outing on the mound for the Lakers, pitching six innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out five. Keith Browning had three hits for the Lakers, and Connor Glick, Josh Smith, Seth Johnson and Jason Ribecky each had a pair of hits. Glick and Ribecky both drove in a run for GVSU.

Grand Valley State returns to action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Minnesota State-Mankato at 2:30 p.m. at Lake Myrtle Park Main Field.
