TAMPA, Fla.—The Grand Valley State baseball team did more to beat itself early in Tuesday's 22-7 loss to #1 University of Tampa, and the Spartans poured it on from that point, routing the Lakers in the first game of GVSU's Florida trip.
The Lakers committed six errors in the game, and early errors led to the first four Spartan runs being unearned runs.
The mishaps caused a close game to spiral out of control, and the Spartans would score another pair of runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and seventh, and nine in an explosive sixth inning that put the game away for good.
Seth Johnson had a solo home run for the Lakers, who fall to 4-4 on the season, while
Jason Ribecky had three hits and scored twice.
Connor Glick,
Anthony Villar and
Josh Smith each had two hits for GVSU.
Troy Dykhuis (1-1) was tagged with the loss, pitching four runs but giving up nine runs (five earned). He walked three and struck out none.
GVSU will return to action tomorrow afternoon as it begins play in the Russmatt Invitational with a game against Ohio Dominican. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
