AUBURNDALE, Fla.—The Grand Valley State baseball team got back on track in a big way on Friday, defeating Alderson Broaddus 13-0 in dominant fashion.
Kyle Lawson hurled a complete game gem, allowing just four hits and striking out 11 Battlers. Prior to today, the last time a Laker pitcher threw a complete game shutout was
Evan Nietfeldt, when he did so versus Ohio Dominican on 4/5/2014.
Anthony Villar was a perfect 4-4 from the plate for the Lakers, and drove in the first four runs of the game in his first two plate appearances. Six Lakers had two or more hits, as Grand Valley finished with 19 hits overall, a season high, and improved to 5-5-1.
The team will return to action tomorrow, with a 9:00 a.m game against Slippery Rock University. The game will be the fourth and final game of the Russmatt Invitational for GVSU.
Lawson closed the door fast on the Battlers,as he retired the side in order in the top of the first, fanning two. After
Jason Ribecky and
Connor Glick both singled to get on board with two outs in the bottom of the first, Villar doubled down the left field line to easily score both runners, giving GVSU an early 2-0 lead.
Leading off the second with a double, the Battlers would get a runner to third base with one out, but Lawson shut the door once more, striking out the next two batters to strand the runner.
The Lakers would strike again in the bottom of the third, as Villar singled home
Matt Williams, who had reached on a hit by pitch, and Ribecky, who had walked. After
Seth Johnson was hit by a pitch two pitches later,
Zach Berry doubled for his first career hit to drive in Villar and Johnson, the third and fourth runs of the inning.
Johnny Nate followed Bery with a double of his own, driving in Berry. After a Battlers pitching change,
Keith Browning singled home Nate to get the score to 9-0.
GVSU would tag on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, when
Jason Ribecky hit his first home run of the season, a two run shot, to make the score 11-0. The Lakers would make it 13-0 after scoring single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Josh Smith,
Keith Browning,
Matt Williams and
Jason Ribecky each had a pair of hits for the Lakers, while Nate finished with three hits.
