Day One ResultsTIFFIN, Ohio - Grand Valley State wraps up the first day of the 2016 GLIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships with their men's and women's teams holding solid first-place leads at the Hermiger Center at Tiffin University.
Winners of 16 consecutive GLIAC indoor titles, the GVSU women tallied 73 points on Saturday and hold a large lead over the next closest teams, second-place Hillsdale (36 pts.) and third-place Ashland (34 pts.). Findlay (18 pts.) and Walsh (17 pts.) round out the top five, while Malone (9 pts.), Lake Erie and Saginaw Valley (6 pts.), Tiffin and Wayne State (5 pts.), and Ohio Dominican (1 pt.) round out the team standings through six scored events.
On the men's side, the six-time consecutive champions earned 55 points after four scored events. Ashland sits in second with 23 points, while Saginaw Valley State finished Saturday in third with 20 points, Tiffin fourth with 15, and Hillsdale fifth with 14 points. Concluding the day's team scores are Findlay (13 pts.) in sixth, Malone (8 pts.) in seventh, Lake Erie (6 pts.) in eighth, and Ohio Dominican and Northwood tied for ninth (1 pt.).
The Laker women saw two of their athletes finish first in their events, while the Laker men had two individuals and their Distance Medley Relay team take first-place.
Jaime Roberts took first in the pole vault by clearing the bar set at 3.91m (12' 10.00''), while
Amy Cymerman won the 5000m with a time of 17:05.25. On the men's side, individual winners on Saturday were
Darien Thornton in the weight throw (20.64m/67' 8.75'') and
Chris May in the 5k (14:39.03), while
Ethan Barnes,
Lawson Bright-Mitchell,
Chaz Porter and
Wuoi Mach won the DMR with a time of 10:00.31.
Grand Valley State also had a large number of athletes with high finishes, scoring them plenty of points on Saturday. The event with the most women scorers was the pole vault, with four Lakers not including the winner Roberts scoring points.
Skylar Schoen placed second (3.81m/12' 6.00"),
Whitney Bice (3.66m/12' 0.00") took fouth,
Michaila Lawcock (3.66m/12' 0.00") placed fifth and
Krista Nauseda (3.51m/11' 6.25") finished sixth.
Other field events where Laker women scored points were
Kyra Hull in the weight throw (4
th, 18.47m/60' 7.25"), and
Sarah Talbott (2
nd, 5.75m/18' 10.50") and
Alexis Duncan (5
th, 5.62m/18' 5.25'') in the long jump, while
Kelly Haubert (17:34.23) finished fourth and
Jenna Klynstra (17:49.99) seventh in the 5000m and the Distance Medley Relay team of

Katie Shaheen and
Kendra Foley finished second with a time of 11:49.19.
For the GVSU men, non first-place finishers in the field events were
Tyler Pavliga (7.06m/23' 2.00") taking seventh in the pole vault, and
Jay Lechner (19.87m/65' 2.25") placing fourth,
Mike Moon (19.59m/64' 3.25'') seventh and
Blake Donson (19.00m/62' 4.00") eighth in the weight throw. In running events, it was
Brady Selner (14:43.09) placing second,
Kyle Flores (14:47.02) taking fourth, and
Nate Orndorf (14:56.60) finishing seventh in the 5000m.
The remainder of Saturday's events were preliminary qualifiers to determine the finals, which will run tomorrow. Those who qualified for Sunday's finals are as follows:
