ST. CHARLES, Mo.—The Grand Valley State baseball team had another strong showing in the first of two games set for Saturday in the second day of the Maryville Invite, downing the Winona State Warriors by a score of 8-4. The victory marks the first game in which the Lakers did not allow first inning runs for their opponent.
Joel Schipper hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run of the game for the Lakers in the bottom of the second inning, and
Johnny Nate singled in the game's second run one inning later in the bottom of the third.
The two teams combined for several scoreless frames, as Winona State pitcher Jay Voter retired 11 straight Lakers at one point, just barely being outdone by GVSU
Zach Anderson putting down 12 straight Warriors.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Lakers would get another run across, as
Josh Griffith singled to get on, and was brought home by a
Seth Johnson double into the right field corner to go up 3-0.
The game would get blown open in the bottom of the eighth, as the Lakers shuttled five runs across to take an 8-0 lead.
Winona State would rally for four runs in the ninth inning, three of them unearned off of a throwing error, but
Sawyer Chambers would get the last batter to foul out to left field to cement the victory.
Zach Anderson (1-1) was excellent for the Lakers, pitching eight shutout innings, walking one and fanning six.
Schipper had two RBI's and a hit for Grand Valley, and
Matt Williams scored three runs and added a hit and an RBI.
The Lakers will immediately turn around and face host Maryville in the second game of the day.
