ST. CHARLES, Mo.—One day, 22 runs, two wins. That was the stat line for the Grand Valley State baseball team at the Maryville Baseball Invite on Saturday, as the Lakers followed up an 8-4 win over Winona State earlier in the day with an 14-3 victory over host Maryville University in the nightcap.
Keith Browning led the way with a three run home run, capping off a dynamic day at the plate with six overall RBI in the two games. He finished with three hits, three runs and three RBI.
Jason Ribecky,
Anthony Villar and
Matt Williams each had two RBI's apiece, while
Alex Young finished with three runs, two hits and an RBI.
Kyle Lawson (1-1) earned the decision on the mound, going five and one-thirds innings , giving up two earned runs on eight hits, walking three and fanning five.
The Lakers scored five runs in the first, two in the fourth and four in the fifth innings, grabbing an 11-0 run in the top of the fifth. Maryville would get two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and one more run in the sixth, but the Lakers would push across three more runs in the eighth inning to reach the final margin.
Brett Nearing and
Reid Kelley would come in in relief, pitching 2.2 and 1.0 innings, respectively. The Lakers compiled 14 hits on the day, and scored their highest run total of the season in the win.
GVSU will play Maryville again on Sunday, with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
