Lakers Win Debut at Maryville Baseball Invite, 7-2

ST.CHARLES, Mo.—The Grand Valley State baseball team defeated Drury University by a score of 7-2 in the second game of the Maryville Baseball Invite, held on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.

The Panthers scored twice in the top of the first inning, but Grand Valley State would get a run back in the bottom of the inning, as Jason Ribecky singled to score Connor Glick.

The Lakers would add one more run in the third inning , as Glick and Ribecky both hit two-out singles.  Josh Griffith then delivered an RBI single of his own, tying the game up at two apiece.

GVSU would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Josh Smith smacked a one our triple to score Johnny Nate, who had singled. Alex Young then singled home Smith, and after stealing second, and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Young himself was brought home by a sacrifice fly from Keith Browning, one of three RBI's on the day for Browning.

Browning delivered again in the sixth inning, singling home Joel Schipper after Schipper singled and Young walked to advance him to second. GVSU would add an insurance run in the eighth off the bat of Browning once again, as his single drove in Josh Smith with two outs in the inning.

The win on the mound was earned by Troy Dykhuis (1-0), who surrendered two first inning runs but none for the remainder, going seven strong innings pitched with four strikeouts and no batters walked. Matt Williams came on to pitch the eighth and nine innings, inheriting three baserunners in the eighth but ending the inning without allowing any runs after getting three straight outs. He walked one and struck out four, earning his second save of the season.

Browning, Glick, Smith, Nate and Ribecky all had two hits apiece for the Lakers (2-2), while Browning had three RBI's and Glick and Smith each scored twice.

Grand Valley State returns to action with a pair of games on Saturday. The first is a 2:30 p.m (CST) tilt against Winona State, and the second is a matchup against host Maryville University, set for a 5.p.m (CST) first pitch.
