LIMA, Ohio – In their first match of the Winter/Spring schedule, Grand Valley State women's tennis eked out a 5-4 victory over NAIA-foe Northwestern Ohio on Sunday. With the win, their first match since the 2016 GLIAC Tournament Championship in October, the Lakers improve to 14-2 overall while the 11th-ranked Racers see their record drop to 4-3.
GVSU opened the match by winning two of three in doubles competition.

Rachel Sumner won the No. 1 draw 8-4, while

Livia Christman won 8-6 in the No. 3 pairing. Although
Alexa Sweeney/
Madison Ballard lost the No. 2 position, it was a close match throughout and the final score was a tight 8-6.
The two teams split singles play, giving the Lakers the win by taking three team points from the Racers. Winning their matches for GVSU were Moccia in the No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), Ballard in the No. 5 (6-3, 6-0), and
Samantha Schrepferman in the No. 6 spot (1-6, 7-5, 6-3).
The next opponent for Grand Valley State is Southern Indiana. The match between the regional foes is scheduled for Sunday (Feb. 28) at 8:15 am at the Premier Athletic Club in Grandville.
