#15 Lakers Suffer 16-6 Defeat to #1 Adelphi

LAKELAND, Fla. - 15th-ranked Grand Valley State suffered their first loss of the 2016 season to top-ranked and back-to-back defending Division II National Champion Adelphi, 16-6, in an in-region, neutral site affair at Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.

Ryan Skomial led the Lakers (1-1) with a pair of goals and assists for four points, along with three of the team's 11 draw control wins and one ground ball. Meghan Datema also chipped in two goals, while Erika Neumen and Kelly Fitzgerald each put one in the back of the net.

Datema tied Skomial for most draw controls on the team with three, while Kelly Leibovitz led the team with two ground ball pick-ups. Kira Dosenberry, Danielle Tunnell and Winnie Bohls caused one turnover apiece, while Sarah Zwilsky made seven saves as she went the full 60 minutes in the loss.

Facing a quick turnaround after knocking off fifth-ranked Florida Southern on Thursday, the Lakers surrendered the first seven goals of the game to fall behind early to the Panthers (0-1). GVSU finally got on the board at 9:22 thanks to a rip from Neumen off a pass by Skomial in a player-down situation. Skomial scored two minutes later on an unassisted strike to make it a five-score contest.

A pair of quick goals from Adelphi put the deficit back at seven, but a Skomial free-position goal with 1:28 on the clock put the score at 9-3 in favor of the seven-time champs. Adelphi made the score 10-3 on a goal with one second on the clock, and the Lakers went into the locker room trailing.

Datema tallied the half's first goal at 24:11, while the defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the first 10 minutes of play. The Lakers couldn't keep the Panthers off the board for all the second half as they scored the next six goals to put the game out of reach for GVSU. Datema scored her second goal of the day with 2:06 left in the game, and Fitzgerald notched the first goal of her college career off a pass from Skomial with 44 seconds on the clock, giving the game it's final score.

Rachel O'Brien led all players with eight points off two goals and six assists, while Jacqueline Jahelka tallied five goals and an assist for six points. Taylor Hayes earned the season-opening win for the Panthers with three saves against four goals allowed in 53:42 minutes between the pipes. Hailey Peterson made one save and allowed two goals in 6:18 of relief. Adelphi controlled all major statistics in the game except for draw controls, which saw both teams draw even with 11 each.

Grand Valley State is next in action on February 28 as they head to St. Charles, Missouri to take on Lindenwod at 4 pm. The Lions, ranked third in the country, are 2-0 after a pair of wins over Indianapolis and McKendree.
