#11 Lakers Fall to #3 Lindenwood in 11-7 Decision

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - #11 Grand Valley State battled back-and-forth all afternoon with #3 Lindenwood, fighting tooth and nail for every groundball and shot. But in the end, the Lakers couldn't pull off their second upset of the season in an 11-7 defeat to the Lions. GVSU falls to 1-2 with the loss, while the Lions remain undefeated as their record improves to 3-0.

Erika Neumen led the team with three goals on five shots, adding in two draw controls, while Meghan Datema led the team with four draw controls in addition to her goal and assist. Kira Dosenberry, in addition to her one assist, led the team with five of the team's 23 ground balls.

The Laker defense caused 11 of Lindenwood's 22 turnovers, with Dosenberry, Caitlin Wojichowski, Chloe Zdybel and Carlyn Shisler causing two each. Sarah Zwilsky put in a valiant effort between the pipes in the loss, making nine saves while picking up two ground balls.

Grand Valley State scored the game's opening goal at 28:41 on a free-position goal from Datema before Lindenwood buried two to take a 2-1 advantage. GV knotted it up a two apiece thanks to a tally by Neumen from Ryan Skomial.

Danielle Tunnell tickled the twine to at 12:02 to put the score at 3-3 after a Lindenwood goal seven minutes prior. Kelly Fitzgerald rocketed a goal past the Lindenwood keeper to put the Lakers ahead 4-3 with three minutes on the clock, but the Lions put one back with under a minute to go into the half to put the score at 4-4 at the conclusion of the first half.

Lindenwood opened the second stanza with a goal at 27:28, but the Lakers answered back quickly after Skomial cashed in on a pass from Datema to tie the game back up. The contest saw its sixth tie score when a Lion player found the back of the net and Neumen scored her second gioal of the game at 19:53. Unfortunately, Lindenwood found the back of the net four times in eight minutes to build a 10-6 lead late in the game. Neumen tallied her third goal of the game at 5:09 off a pass from Dosenberry to make it a three-score contest, but the Lions kept GV from taking any more shots before scoring their 11th and final goal of the game with 45 seconds left in the game.

The teams drew even with 23 ground balls each, while the Lakers held an 11-9 advantage in draw controls and saves. Lindenwood outshot Grand Valley State 30-22, and committed 22 turnovers to GV's 26.

#18 Bentley is the next opponent on the docket for the Lakers. Their in-region, out-of-conference game with the Falcons takes place on March 8 in Waltham, Mass. at 3 pm.
