EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Grand Valley State baseball team suffered a setback in it's young season, dropping a 13-5 decision to Southern Indiana in Evansville on Saturday. The loss evens the three game series between the teams at one win and one loss apiece, heading into tomorrow's series finale, set for a 12:00 pm start (CST).
After Friday's season opener featured offense in limited quantities in going into extra innings tied 3-3, Saturday's game was an offensive explosion for the Screaming Eagles, who chased GVSU starter
Zach Anderson (0-1) for five runs in the opening frame, and added a sixth run in the second inning.
After a scoreless first and second inning, GVSU manufactured a couple runs in the third inning. After
Keith Browning and
Johnny Nate singled, a wild pitch allowed Browning to score and advanced Nate to second base. The next batter,
Connor Glick, delivered his first RBI of the new campaign, singling to left center and scoring Nate.
Unfortunately for GVSU, the Screaming Eagles also did some damage in the third, getting after
Josh Griffith, who came in to pitch in relief of Anderson. A single, a walk and a throwing error allowed two unearned runs to score, making the score 8-2. On the next batter, a fielding error allowed the hitter, Kyle Neimeier to reach safely, and another unearned run to score. After two quick outs, Neimeier stole second, and came around to score a fourth unearned run in the inning after another fielding error, the third GV error of the inning, allowed Kyle Kempf to reach first base.
Southern Indiana would add another run in the fourth inning to make it 11-2, and two more in the sixth inning off of an RBI single to make the margin 13-2.
Grand Valley State would finally add another run in the top of the seventh, as
Joel Schipper doubled and later came around to score off of a single by
Keith Browning. Neither team would score in the eighth frame, and the Lakers would have one more inning to make up the difference.
In the top of the ninth inning, the Lakers got a man on first and second after a fielder's choice failed to get either Zack Berry or
Joel Schipper out.
Nick Schultz then singled to third, loading the bases for Keith Browing. Browning would himself reach on a fielding error by the shortstop, allowing Schipper and Berry to score, drawing the score to 13-5. However Eagles pitcher Colin Hudson struck out the next two Lakers to end the game without further damage.
Lucas Barnett (1-0) got the win for SIU, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, walking one and striking out nine.
Zach Anderson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out none.
Josh Griffith pitched four innings in relief for GVSU, striking out four.
Keith Brownng led the Lakers with a productive day at the plate, tallying two hits, a run, a walk and two RBI.
