vs Lake Superior State (Thursday, 6:00 p.m.): Watch | Listen | Live Stats | Game Notes at Northwood (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.): Listen | Live Stats | Game NotesALLENDALE, Mich.—There's no place like home for the Grand Valley State women's basketball team, and after playing their last three games away from the friendly confines of GVSU Fieldhouse Arena, the Lakers (17-6, 12-5 GLIAC) return for a home rematch with Lake Superior State University (5-18, 4-13 GLIAC) on Thursday. The game is the first of the normal two game weekend set, although Saturday's matchup sees the Lakers back on the road as they travel to take on Northwood (13-10, 9-8 GLIAC) at home.
There are links above to follow along to the radio broadcast of both games, as well as links to follow the live stats and video for thursday's home game. The games will be aired on WTKG-AM 1230, with fifth year play-by-play announcer
DJ Foster calling the action.
Grand Valley is 10-1 at home this season, with a lone loss to #6 Ashland blemishing what has otherwise been a dominant stretch of home games. Eight straight home wins have come by double digits, including a 71-47 win against Northwood on January 23
rd. Thursday will be Lake Superior State's first visit to the Allendale this season, but the first matchup of the Lakers was a 71-49 victory for Grand Valley on January 21
st.
Since that game, not much has changed for either Laker squad. GVSU still ranks second in the conference in scoring, with 73.9 points per contest. GVSU is converting on 44 percent of attempts from the field, fourth in the conference, and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc, which is also the second best mark in the conference. Grand Valley features three players (
Piper Tucker,
Kayla Dawson and
Lindsay Baker) in the top five in the GLIAC in three point shooting percentage, and is sixth in the country in triples per game, with 9.4 per contest.
Grand Valley comes into the matchup off of a close loss to Michigan Tech on Saturday. The 57-55 loss was the lowest point total for GVSU this season, and tied the Quincy game (Nov. 15
th) for the slimmest losing margin this season. The Huskies scored the winning layup with just one second left in the game, handing the Lakers their sixth loss of the season and snapping their three game win streak.
Kayla Dawson was the lone bright spot for the Lakers, scoring 20 points and hauling in seven rebounds in the losing effort.
Lake Superior, conversely, comes into the matchup with some momentum gained in a 78-75, double overtime victory at home on Saturday. The 78 points tied their season high in scoring, as leading scorer Mackenzie Edwards poured in 30 points (9-17 FG, 8-10 FT). Edwards also added six rebounds and six assists, as LSSU earned just their fifth win of the season.
Saturday's road matchup versus Northwood is one of just two remaining road games for Grand Valley. Road games have been the Achilles Heel for GVSU this season, as the team is just 6-4 on the road, including an 0-3 mark in road games against top teams in the North and South Divisions (SVSU, Michigan Tech, Ohio Dominican).
In the previous matchup with Northwood at home on January 23
rd, the Lakers were led by a career high 28 points from
Kayla Dawson, and shot 50 percent (25-50) as a team from the field in the victory. GVSU also held the GLIAC's second leading scorer, Jordyn Nurenberg, in check, holding her below her average of 17.3 points per game. She would finish 6-11 from the field for 15 points and 10 rebounds. No other Timberwolves reached double figures, as Grand Valley held Northwood to just 37.7 percent (20-53) shooting from the field and just 47 total points. Northwood enters the week having won three of their last four, although their last game was a 73-68 loss to Saginaw Valley.
With two games on the slate for this weekend, and her scoring average standing at a healthy 16.6 points per contest, junior
Kayla Dawson stands a strong chance of breaking into the 1,000 point club in her career as a Laker. With 974 career points, she needs just 26 points to become the 23
rd Laker in the history of the women's basketball program to reach 1,000 points.
Tip off for Thursday is set for 6 p.m at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. In addition to being 10-1 at home this season, the Lakers are 9-3 in night games (with a 5 p.m. or later start). Saturday's game is set for a 4 p.m. start at the Riepma Arena in Midland, Michigan. GVSU is 8-1 in games played on Saturday this season, and 8-3 in day games.
