#2 GVSU Set To Host #14 Ferris State In Anchor-Bone Classic

#2-Ranked Grand Valley State (5-0) is set to host #14 Ferris State (4-1) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tilt this Saturday (Oct. 8) in the annual Anchor-Bone Classic contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lubbers Stadium in Allendale. Grand Valley State is coming off a 38-34 victory over the Bulldogs a year ago in the NCAA DII playoffs when GVSU advanced to the NCAA DII semifinals for the ninth time since 2001. Grand Valley State claimed a 24-21 win at Ohio Dominican last Saturday, while Ferris State defeated Findlay, 20-17, on the road.

The Lakers have won 15-of-the-last-20 meetings between the schools, including the most recent 38-34 win at FSU in the NCAA Playoffs. • Grand Valley State is in its 46th season of football and sport a 376-137-3 all-time record. GVSU's .7315 winning percentage tops all Division II schools and is third all-time in all divisions behind Michigan (.733) and Notre Dame (.7317).

• Grand Valley State remained #2 in the AFCA Division II Coaches' poll with 717 points after a 24-21 victory at Ohio Dominican last Saturday. NW Missouri State is #1 with all 30 first place votes and 750 points.

• Grand Valley State has been ranked in the top five of 149 AFCA Division II Coaches' polls since 2001, including 102 weeks as the number one team in the country.

• Last Week
Grand Valley State claimed a 24-21 victory at Ohio Dominican last Saturday. The Lakers scored 17 second quarter points, including 10 in the final :16 seconds with a Marty Carty 2-yard TD run and a career-long 47-yard field goal as time expired by Joel Schipper following a fumble strip and recovery by Sydney Omameh. Carter added a third quarter TD and Devin McKissic's interception with :16 seconds left in the game at the Laker five yard line sealed the win. GVSU picked off four passes in the game, including three on the Panthers' final four possessions. QB Bart Williams copleted 21-of-34 passes for 280 yards and one TD, while WR Matt Williams hauled set career-highs with catches (9) and receiving yards (172). WR Nick Dodson caught a career-high eight passes for 59 yards. LB Collin Schlosser led the defense with 14 tackles and 1.5 TFL (-4), while DE Sydney Omameh recorded 2.0 QB sacks (-9) and 2.5 TFL (-12). In addition to McKissic's pick, Marquez Gollman, Donte Carey and Jailyn Harden each picked off a pass. 

• Grand Valley State leads the GLIAC in scoring offense (42.4), scoring defense (11.8), total defense (300.4), turnover margin (1.4), sacks (4.0), TFL (9.0), 3rd down defense (.333) and red zone defense (.556), while ranking second in rushing offense (269.4), rushing defense (96.2) and total offense (522.2) 

• The Lakers have outscored their first five opponents 61-0 in the first quarter and 73-3 in the second quarter for a first half total of 134-3 (26.8 - 0.60)...GVSU has scored in 17-of-20 quarters this season.

• GVSU has converted an incredible 35-of-60 (58.0%) attempts on 3rd down this season ranking first in the GLIAC, while the opposition is 23-for-69 (33.0%), ranking GVSU 1st in the gliac in third down defense.

• The Laker offense has been explosive the first four games of the season with 42 plays that have gone for 20 yards or more, including 10 of which have gone for TDs...WR Matt Williams leads the way with  10, followed by RB's Marty Carter and Christian Lumpkin with seven each and Urston Smith and Nick Dodson with five each.

• The Laker defense ranks first in the GLIAC and 7th nationally in QB sacks with 20 (-116), while also ranking first in the GLIAC and 18th nationally in tackles for loss with 45 (-186).

        • Toted the ball 16 times for 82 yards and two TDs at Ohio Dominican (10/1)...Rushed for 98 yards on 15 carries in three quarters of action at Walsh (9/24)...Carter tallied a record-setting performance with 298 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries in a 50-24 victory over Northern Michigan (9/17) in which he was named the D2Football.com National Offensive Player of the Week and the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week....Carter's rushing total was a GVSU single-game record and tied for the 10th-best, single-game total in GLIAC history...Former Laker Chris Robinson previously held the GV record with 261 yards on 33 carries at Findlay 2014...Carter rushed for 144 yards and two TDs on nine carries vs. Lake Erie (9/10) in the first half and was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week.
