MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team took down the Warriors of Wayne State in the first round of the GLIAC tournament by a score of 5-2. The Lakers had previously defeated Wayne State 5-4 in the regular season.
Starting off the match was doubles competition, where Grand Valley was able to take a 2-1 lead before singles play started. In the No. 1 position, the duo of
Madison Ballard and
Rachel Sumner were able to pull off a close 8-6 win over Olivia Peisachovitz and Liz Ghellere to get things started for the Lakers. The second victory came in the No. 2 doubles match as the pair of
Aimee Moccia and
Allie Sweeney came out with a lopsided 8-0 victory over Dasha Kuznetsova and Julia Walz. Â
In singles competition, the Lakers needed to win three out of the six matches to advance to the next round. One of those wins came from Sweeney in the No. 2 singles position after she defeated Peisachovitz by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Another win came from the No. 3 singles spot where
Abby Perkins took down Ghellere 6-4, 6-1. The final win came via
Olivia Christman as she defeated Astrid Ciellza 6-1, 6-1. Wayne State was able to win one singles match before Grand Valley secured the victory and the final two singles matches went unfinished.Â
The second round of the tournament will start tomorrow at 3:45 with the Lakers facing off against Tiffin who won their opening round match against Michigan Tech.Â
