ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Grand Valley State women's tennis (7-2) team took to the GVSU Tennis Courts on Saturday to face conference foe Walsh (3-8). The Lakers were able to come away with a 6-3 victory in the match with a big lift from their depth.
The No. 1 singles and doubles competitors for the Lakers both fell, but there was only one other loss among the other draws, which came in No. 3 singles for GVSU on Saturday.
Alexa Sweeney was able to improve to 8-3 on the season in dual matches on the year after a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles over Mercedes Fernanez of Walsh.
For GVSU, Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles proved to be the difference maker in the dual match, as the Lakers would win each match in straight sets. In No. 4 singles,
Aimee Moccia defeated Walsh's Victoria Ambrosio 6-0, 6-1.
Nicole Heiniger took down Walsh's Gabriela Laguna-Leon 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 singles. No. 6 singles showed
Katarina Samardzija defeating Natalie Molhar of Walsh 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, GVSU won the No. 2 and No. 3 draws 8-0 and 8-2, respectively.
Madison Ballard paired with
Rachel Sumner in No. 2 doubles to defeat Walsh's Ambrosio and Laguna-Leon 8-0. In No. 3 doubles, the GVSU duo of
Abby Perkins and
Livia Christman took down Walsh's Daria Bondareva and Snezhana Kiseleva 8-2.
The Lakers return to action tomorrow when they take on Ashland in GLIAC action at 10 a.m.
