Game Notes Allendale, Mich.—Winners of four of their last five, the Grand Valley State women's basketball team has been on a roll as of late, and will look to add to their impressive 6-1 record at home this season when they face a pair of important GLIAC North foes this weekend. The Lakers (10-4, 5-3 GLIAC) will first face off against the Northern Michigan Wildcats (5-9, 4-4 GLIAC) on Thursday night, before a pivotal matchup with Michigan Tech (8-4, 6-2 GLIAC) on Saturday, and the Huskies remain ahead of Grand Valley in the North Division Standings heading into the weekend's games.

DJ Foster calling the action.
In Thursday's matchup, the Lakers will face a below .500 squad in Northern Michigan, who is coming off of a low scoring 45-38 victory over Lake Erie on Saturday. The Wildcats have struggled offensively this season, with a .369/.278/.664 (FG/3-PT/FT) shooting line entering Thursday's contest, and averaging just over 55 points per game. Leading scorer Bre Gaspervich averages just over 10 points a game on 34 percent shooting, as the Wildcats rank second to last in the GLIAC in field goal percentage.
The Lakers may look to capitalize on sloppy ball control by Northern Michigan, as the Wildcats surrender over 17 turnovers a game, and the Lakers have excelled at turning opponents mistakes into points, as they did in Saturday's 89-42 victory over Malone, when they turned 22 Malone turnovers into 37 points. So far this season, the Lakers have been tough sledding for opponents, who shoot just .386/.314/.711 against Grand Valley and only average 58.4 points per game against the stingy Lakers defense.
Grand Valley has gotten the better of the Wildcats as of late, having beaten them in three seperate matchups last seaosn, including a 74-52 win on March 4th in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament. The last GVSU loss to the Wildcats was a 59-61 loss in Allendale on February 6
th, 2014.
Saturday's opponent, Michigan Tech, is not cut from the same cloth. Tech averages a healthy 71.4 points per game on offense, good for fifth in conference, and feature a .459/.371/.740 shooting line. Junior guard Morgan Anderson and senior center Kylie Moxley lead the Huskies with 13.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, though two other players, junior Kelly Guy and senior forward Danielle Blake both average double digit scoring. Blake also leads the Huskies in rebounding with 9.3 boards per game, while Moxley averages 6.9 boards in just under 27 minutes a game. The Lakers dropped all three games the two teams played last season, including a 66-77 defeat to the 9th ranked Huskies in Houghton in the GLIAC Tournament on March 7th, 2015 that ended the Laker's season.
On defense, the Huskies boast one of the GLIAC's tougher units, allowing opponents to shoot just 39 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc against them, and own a healthy margin in scoring averages over their opponents, 72.1-60.3. Breaking down the Huskies defense will be pivotal if the Lakers want to find room to convert their league leading 9.7 3-pointers per game.
Taking a firm lead as the Laker's top scorer,
Kayla Dawson has proven herself a veritable scoring threat in a variety of ways, and is averaging 16 points a game to show for it. She has also been a menace on defense, leading the team with 31 steals. Around her is a capable cast of shooters that can hit shots when needed. Guard
Taylor Lutz and
Brionna Barnett have shown a knack for finding the open shooters, and have 51 assists each this season. It's no secret the Lakers have excelled at the long ball this season, leading the conference with 136 three pointers, good for sixth in the nation. Six different Lakers have hit double digits 3-pointers this season, and the team is converting on 36.7 percent of their tries, the third best mark in the league.
Thursday's matchup is set for a 6 pm tip-off at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena, while Saturday is set for a 1 p.m start, and is a blackout at GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
