ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State women's tennis pulled out a hard earned 6-3 victory over Northwood on Sunday (Sept. 13) at the GVSU Tennis Courts. The Lakers improve to 4-0 overall and in the GLIAC, while the visiting Timberwolves see their overall and conference record fall to 2-1.

The last time these teams met was in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Tournament, which saw the fifth-seeded Lakers fall 5-3 to the fourth-seeded Timberwolves. Grand Valley State jumped out to an early lead in the 2015 regular season match-up by sweeping doubles for the first time this season.

Grand Valley State would earn their fourth win of the season by taking three of the six singles matches over Northwood. Five out of the six matches required a third set to win the match, and three of those five matches featured extra-play for the tiebreaker point. Perkins won from the first singles position 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. The sophomore won the second-set tiebreaker 7-4 to help her over her opponent. In the singles match four, Christman won 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-0 to defeat her opposition, and Sumner won 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 from the No. 5 position.

Grand Valley State returns to the courts on Friday (Sept. 18) when they face reigning GLIAC champion Wayne State at 2 p.m. at the GVSU Tennis Courts. The Lakers will then host Hillsdale on Saturday (Sept. 19) at 2:30 p.m.
